I’ve often said free agents rarely play better for new teams.

Womens Barry Church Jersey So many mistakes were made in this saga, starting with Osweiler’s miscalculation when he rejected a reported $16 million-per-year deal (with over $30 million guaranteed) from Denver. He had a 5-2 record as starter in 2015 in relief of the injured Peyton Manning, including a 30-24 overtime win in late November over the then-unbeaten Patriots. His numbers on the season were decent, but not great: 10 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 86.4 quarterback rating. But he was a former second-round pick who John Elway and the Broncos felt was ready to take over when Manning retired.

In Denver, Osweiler had an excellent offensive supporting cast with two top receivers in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. He had the league’s best defense and an excellent coaching staff that believed in him. Yet he turned his back on Denver, took the money and ran to Houston.

I’ve often said free agents rarely play better for new teams. They have new systems to learn. The pressure of big contracts comes with great expectations from inside and outside the organization.

Stanton had offers to play college football (USC was among the interested teams) and had accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Tulane, but the Marlins drafted him and gave him a nice bonus to forget about football. That worked out well for both sides.

Long before Lester was the veteran who helped the Cubs end their 108-year-long World Series skid, he was a prep lefty from Washington who was the seventh pitcher taken in the second round. Six other teams are still kicking themselves, but the Red Sox were thrilled.

Mets saw Tim Tebow as someone who could ‘expand the brand’

David Harris Authentic Jersey
MLB teams that were seriously considering signing Tim Tebow last year knew he represented a double-edged sword.

It was more, ‘This is something you have to do.’ It wasn’t an ask, McCutchen told reporters Friday (via It was more of [the team saying] that I have to move there and it’s for the betterment of the team. That’s one of the first times where that’s something I wanted to go against.

Daimion Stafford Jersey But as I’m saying that, I’m talking about myself. I had to not be as selfish and just accept that’s what I have to do and move over to right.

McCutchen, 30, says he still felt he could do the job in center.

It’s more difficult because I feel I can still play it, he said. I don’t feel like I’m at the end of my career. You know, people like to say, ‘Torii Hunter moved to right.’ Uh, also, Torii Hunter was 35 years old when he moved to right. So at the same time, I’m 30, and I feel like I can still play it.

The player who helped resurrect baseball in Pittsburgh after 20 straight losing seasons is ready for a bounce-back year. He played hurt at times in 2016 and struggled in the field and at the plate, with career lows in batting average .256 and OPS (.766). He’s entering 2017 with optimism, and trying to put a positive spin on the shift to right, as his tweet of legendary Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente earlier this month showed.

Once I got over the fact that I had to move, the more I started to look at it, get some positivity out of it, that’s one way to look at it, McCutchen said. Clemente set the standard for someone I would love to be like — at least half that guy. It’s an honor to be out there playing in that position.

Paul Goldschmidt leads Diamondbacks past Rockies with power surge

When compiling a list of the top five position players in MLB, few would start with Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. But, the four-time All-Star should certainly be in the discussion.

Goldschmidt led the Diamondbacks to a 6-3 win over the Rockies Friday in Colorado by collecting three hits with two home runs, five RBIs and a walk. He is now batting .330 with seven home runs 26 RBIs and eight stolen bases on the season.

Youth Steve Largent Jersey His power/speed combination is unprecedented, and he even currently surpasses Mike Trout in that regard. Goldschmidt is underrated a bit because he plays for a Diamondbacks team that has struggled in recent seasons. But the guy can flat out ball.

Yes, Judge is tied for the major league lead with 13 home runs. Yes, his power is being compared to that of Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins and Yankees legend Mickey Mantle. But it’s the play of other young Yankees like Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino, combined with the reinvigorated performance of veterans such as Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury, that has TV viewers excited, Litner says.

It’s always about story lines. What’s clearly happened is that die-hard Yankees fans, as well as casual baseball fans in New York, realize something is happening with this team in the Bronx. It’s a new hero every night, Litner said. It’s a team that’s developing a personality, I believe, built around an infusion of young players and a sense of joy.

They play hard for each other. They love playing the game. They play it the right way. And they know that they’re never out of a particular game, Litner added. It’s not just about some of the young stars who clearly are developing like Aaron Judge. It’s about the entire team.

NFL Draft 2017: Rams take South Alabama tight end Gerald Everett

After drafting a pair of tight ends last year, the Rams grabbed another one Friday with their first pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Rams selected South Alabama tight end Gerald Everett with the 12th pick of the second round, 44th overall.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. in the intersection of Azeele Street and Habana Avenue in Tampa. Martin’s vehicle was driven off the road and hit an air conditioning unit outside of a local business. Martin received minor cuts and bruises as a result of the crash and needed stitches for a cut on his chin.

“If it’s going downhill, there is no way I’m playing him,” Cutler said. “For what? So he can go out there and take a beating and get off to a rough start as an NFL quarterback?”

Cutler implored his former team not to succumb to pressure from frustrated fans wanting Trubisky to start over Mike Glennon, for whom many believe the team overpaid with a guaranteed $16 million in 2017.

“I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of people calling for (Trubisky’s) name because you draft him at No. 2 and you draft him for a reason and that’s to play football and win games,” Cutler said.

Cutler will get a chance to dig deeper into the Bears’ impending quarterback controversy during his first game as a Fox broadcaster. In a three-man booth with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis, Cutler will call Chicago’s game at the Titans in the third week of the preseason, Burkhardt revealed on Mad Dog Radio (via Pro Football Talk).

The Cardinals have to give their first two picks in the 2017 draft to Houston and also pay $2 million to the Astros

What the Texans have learned from the Osweiler disaster will be evident if they find themselves in the running for the services of Tony Romo. You can be sure that there will be a lengthy sit-down with Romo (after an extensive physical exam) before any deal is consummated.

The lessons learned — or once again revealed — in the Osweiler story: Be sure to buy a well-proven commodity, and always take an in-person look before making a franchise-altering commitment.

The Cardinals have to give their first two picks in the 2017 draft to Houston and also pay $2 million to the Astros. And Chris Correa, the club’s former scouting director who was deemed solely responsible for the whole fiasco, has been added to MLB’s permanently ineligible list. For more details, check out this story.

Here, we want to provide some context for those two picks heading to Houston, to put faces with the numbers. The Cardinals didn’t have a first-rounder — that was forfeited when they signed center fielder Dexter Fowler — so they’re sending picks No. 56 and No. 75 to the Astros.

The glovework at shortstop is second-to-none. He was drafted, as you see, in 2010 and before the start of his third season, the Braves gave him a seven-year, $58 million contract. And then, less than two years later, they traded him to the Angels.

Watch: Rockies’ Mark Reynolds hits broken-bat home run

Most broken-bat swings result in a weak ground ball or pop up.

Rockies slugger Mark Reynolds got sawed off on a pitch by Arizona pitcher Zack Greinke Saturday that splintered his bat — yet Reynolds still somehow muscled the ball over the left-center-field wall for a home run.

The sixth-inning solo shot sparked the Rockies, who trailed the Diamondbacks 6-1 at the time, to a 7-6 win.

Though the other productions had their own approaches and merits, and saw their own success, It’s a Long Way to October remains the standout of this unofficial trilogy, even for Diamond.

Industry praise and accolades aside, there were long-term rewards as well.

The documentary propelled Diamond’s career in sports broadcasting, leading to a long run with Turner Sports producing Braves games and other events, and in recent years producing Dodgers games for SportsNet LA.

Making It’s a Long Way to October taught him to feel baseball. Not just watch and observe, but to actually feel, to anticipate. Thirty-five years removed, those lessons about the sport’s intricacies, on and off the field, continue to pay off.

It’s a Long Way to October’ was an iconic professional moment in my life, Diamond said.

Even though It’s a Long Way to October didn’t pioneer the concept of athletes and coaches wearing wireless microphones during games, it certainly took it to the next level and made the possibilities and benefits clear.

They avoided the emotion of a wild first round and stuck with a plan

The Browns have used a second first-round pick on a quarterback three times since 1999, picking Brady Quinn (2007), Brandon Weeden (2012) and Johnny Manziel (2014). None of those picked panned out, and it appears the Browns finally learned their lesson. Cleveland let other teams trade up to grab Mitchell Trubisky, Pat Mahomes II and Deshaun Watson this time. They avoided the emotion of a wild first round and stuck with a plan.

The rest of the night was still interesting. The Browns traded the No. 12 pick to Houston for more picks, and moved down to the No. 25 spot where they took Michigan standout Jabrill Peppers. Cleveland added another pick at No. 29 — through a trade with Green Bay — and grabbed Miami tight end David Njoku.

Three picks. No quarterbacks. You know what? We like it.

Cleveland played this round right, and the Moneyball approach from general manager Sashi Brown, chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta and coach Hue Jackson continues to be a fascinating storyline for a franchise trying to reverse course from a 1-15 season. The Browns avoided a draft-day temptation that has bitten the franchise three times in the past.

He wasn’t involved in no brawl, Jim Kelly said. But people have to put that as a headline, ‘Chad Kelly involved in a brawl.’ He goes, ‘Uncle Jim, I saw my little brother getting kicked. What do you want me to do, stand there and watch?’ He said, ‘I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I was just trying to get him off the bottom of the pile at a high school football game.’

Bills fire GM Doug Whaley, entire scouting staff

The uncomfortable final days of general manager Doug Whaley in Buffalo have come to an end.

The Bills announced Sunday morning they had fired Whaley. The team also cleaned house in the pro and amateur scouting departments as the franchise moves in a new direction in the front office after extending their playoff drought that stems back to 1999.

Bolles’ 4-month-old son, Kingston, was the center of attention as his father had him model the No. 1 Broncos jersey set aside for the 6-5, 300-pound tackle.

Bolles, 24, is older than the other first-round picks, as he spent two years on a Mormon mission. The younger Bolles certainly dressed for the occasion.

Bolles went No. 20 overall, in a draft considered weak in offensive line prospects. In fact, this marked the first draft in the Super Bowl era that an offensive lineman didn’t go in the first 15 picks.

Broncos general manager John Elway tweeted , “Excited that Garett Bolles was available for us to take w/our 1st rd pick. He was the most athletic tackle in the draft & plays w/toughness!”

Expect to see more of little Kingston as his dad begins his career in Denver.

New England traded back from its first chance to pick and still ended up with intriguing, smaller-school upside picks in hybrid edge player Derek Rivers (Youngstown State) and potential future left tackle Antonio Garcia (Troy). For the Super Bowl champs, it’s all gravy now with their offseason.

He wasn’t traded, which means he will indeed play out the season in Washington. The 49ers also didn’t draft a true franchise QB, only a trade-up flyer on Iowa’s C.J. Beatherd in the third round. That means Cousins can expect to name his price with San Francisco next offseason.

Maybe it’s too easy for the King.

Syndergaard was scratched from his start on Thursday with biceps tendinitis, as he couldn’t lift his arm above his shoulders. He refused to get an MRI to take a closer look at the injury, and the Mets didn’t push him into changing his mind and doing the smart thing even though they were the ones who requested he get his arm looked at. So, that’s how we ended up with Syndergaard starting on Sunday, leaving the game early due to an arm injury, and the Mets feeling like they lost a series they had won before the day even began.

Kyle Arrington Limited Jersey As Emma Span joked about and Ken Rosenthal noted, the Mets tend to downplay injuries. If even they were concerned, we should be surprised Syndergaard even still had his arm attached to his body on Sunday. On Monday, Thor will get the MRI he should have already received, but as John Smoltz pointed out within that Rosenthal piece, it’s not like the MRI is going to help Syndergaard (or other young pitchers) differentiate between injury and soreness.

LeBron James scored 39 points on 14 field goal attempts and the Cavaliers handled the Raptors in Game 2 without ever looking bothered, as if he doesn’t see Kyle Lowry and friends as worthy of his attention.

Maybe it’s too easy for the King. The camera has been on him the whole series, and even at its tightest shot, when it’s zoomed in so close that you can see the latest efforts by his barber to preserve his hairline, there hasn’t been a hint of sweat on his brow. James’ headband is as dry as his Instagram humor. He looks like he just left a photoshoot after each game.

James against the Raptors is the definition of indifferent. One thing is clear: He doesn’t respect the Raptors at all.

Buffalo Bills fire general manager Doug Whaley 1 day after the draft

The attorney sought to clarify to Rapoport that the sexual contact was not intercourse.

The alleged assault took place in a hotel suite bathroom in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 9. The woman went to a local hospital for a sexual assault forensic examination following the incident. When police arrived on the scene, Conley had already left.

The police report contains a statement from one of the male witnesses who said that Conley never touched her. Instead, he said the woman was simply angry that Conley had kicked her out of the room. The other male witness told police that Conley and the woman were lying on a bed together, but that nothing happened between the two.

Conley’s attorney, Kevin Spellacy, arranged for Conley to speak with Cleveland police on Monday, after the conclusion of the 2017 draft. Conley was also planning to submit DNA for testing.
